Have you heard of the concept called “Year Zero”?
It’s when you’ve just started on a new journey, for example, surface design, and you don’t see any results for a while.
It’s a period of time when you put in the effort to learn, practice, fail - on repeat - and you don’t get paid, or, recognised for your hard work.
It’s uncomfortable and at times, demotivating, because you’ve got to put the work (and time) before you can see any significant results.
Year Zero can last anywhere between months to years and the truth is, this is where most people give up.
watch this interview with my mentor and guide of six years, bonnie christine. She’s a surface designer, entrepreneur and mom of two. we'll have a chat about how important this phase is and how we can not only survive but also thrive in our Year Zero.
with Bonnie Christine & Mable Tan
Everyone has a "Year Zero" when starting out - it's a normal part of the journey.
Consistency is key - do at least one thing every day to build momentum.
Have clarity on your end goal to stay focused and motivated.
Manage your mindset - believe in yourself and your abilities.
Rejection is guaranteed - build resilience to keep going.
Cherish the "Year Zero" time to explore creativity without pressure.

I'm a proud partner of the Immersion Course because it's where I'd learned to be a surface designer. My life changed completely thanks to the Immersion Course.
Yep, that amazing online program was how I transformed my life from a clueless designer (who didn't even know how to create a collection) to a pattern-making machine.
And the best part? It's not just about the skills (although, mastering Adobe Illustrator and building a killer portfolio was pretty sweet). My confidence as a person, a mother, a wife has improved 110%. I'm a much happier person today than I was 6 years ago.
The course is pure magic because of Bonnie Christine. She's like the fairy godmother of design and business, guiding you through every step with kindness and patience. Whenever you falter, you'll have Bonnie's voice gently nudging back on track. ✨
Whether you're a total Illustrator newbie or an art veteran, this course meets you right where you are. It's like having a roadmap to your creative dreams, complete with repeat patterns, collections, portfolios and every know-how to share your art with the world. Plus, bonus points for the lifetime access – you can learn at your own pace, rewind, and rewatch whenever the inspiration strikes.
But the real secret sauce? Your Immersion SISTERS! The people you'll meet will become your personal cheer squad, your sounding board, your source of endless inspiration. They'll be there for your "wow, this is amazing!" moments and the inevitable "creative block" meltdowns. Have questions? The live Q&A sessions and question-answering replays got your back 24/7. You'll have your hand held throughout the entire eight weeks by Bonnie and team.

As you know (or not), I’m based in Melbourne, Australia and so I would say a lot of it is relevant to us here in Australia or wherever you're from. To be honest, the licensing market is still fairly new in Australia so what you’ll learn from Immersion will be above and beyond, which is great because when you deal with bigger companies and organisations, you know what they want and need.
There are a lot of smaller businesses that are starting to license in Australia but most of them don’t know what it involves, so it is incredibly useful that you know your stuff so that you can stand your ground, especially when it comes to contracts and pricing.
Q: I'm not based in the U.S., will what I learn from Immersion still be relevant to me?
The first 15 and lucky winners to the coaching call will be notified within a week after Immersion enrollment cart closes or when I get my affiliate report from the Immersion team. The bonus sessions will be delivered between May 1 - August 1 2024. You will be notified by email with all the details as soon as possible. the Zoom call is recorded so if you can't make it live to the Q&A zoom call, the replay link will be sent to you.
Q: When will I know if I've made the first 15 for the 1:1 coaching call? when you deliver the group Q&A and will there be a replay?
Oh man, I remember that feeling. It’s the pits. I had just enough money to sign up for Immersion and I felt so torn. Do I spend more money on yet another course that may do nothing for my career, or do I use it towards groceries? I was a new mum, so nappies and formula milk was always on the list (I couldn’t breastfeed, but that's an entirely different story).
This was what I’d say to everyone: If it doesn’t break the bank, and you can still afford the necessities e.g. pay the bills, mortgage/ rent, put food on the table, then I’d say, “Yes, it’s VERY much worth the investment.”
I had to give a career talk to my son recently, and my little guy was so proud of me. He was wearing the raincoat I’d design, showing off all the stuff that had my art on it to his classmates. It was so sweet and a little embarrassing. To see him so full of pride for me and my work made me feel that I made the right choice.
Your kids will learn from you. They will see how hard you’ve work towards your dreams and passion. And to me, that’s such a valuable life lesson.
Q: I'm afraid to invest so much in a course that doesn't guarantee anything (I could use the money for groceries!).
I think the modules in Immersion can still be advantageous for professional graphic designers especially when it comes to how to make a collection, putting a portfolio together, how to pitch to clients and understanding contracts. The business aspect of being a surface designer is so important.
The best part of being a surface designer is the freedom to make art that represents you. You're giving voice to your creative expression. It's not your clients, their brand and product - it's all you. You get to put the beauty you create out in the world.
Then, there's also making your art work hard for you. As a graphic designer and illustrator, that piece of work is only meant for one use and one client, but with surface design, it can be put on as many products possible for several clients (depending on the agreement, of course, but if you know how to negotiate, it can be done towards your advantage). Working like that will give you more time to do other things.
I love that you already know illustrator and have a background in graphic design, which means you’re already ahead of the game. I come from an advertising background and have used Illustrator for many years but boy, what I learned from Immersion was next level. It improved my workflow in ways I didn’t even know I could. You don't know what you don't know.
Q: I'm already work as graphic designer, how will taking Immersion benefit me?
Immersion is perfect for beginners. You don't need to know how to draw, or be good at it. Bonnie has always claimed she was not a good drawer (I know, it's hard to imagine), but it's all in the 'tricks'. There are many ways to create art without knowing how to draw and Bonnie teaches all the different strategies. And if you need more help, the support team is there for you. Note: Having a good eye is always a good thing. You're already ahead of the crowd.
Q: I've never touched Illustrator in my life! I don't even know how to draw but I always had a good eye. Is Immersion for me?
It's never too late and as Bonnie always says, "there's room for you". All our lives, we were told to be a certain 'someone' - how to be the perfect daughter, the perfect wife, the perfect mother and all our dreams were pushed out of sight. This is the time to for you to do what you want, to listen to our long-forgotten inner child and let us be who we are meant to be.
When I took the step towards the Immersion Course, I gave myself the permission to do what my soul has always needed. And it was like walking into playground for artists, oooh everything was so visually beautiful and inspiring. I finally allowed myself to just be and inhaled all the lessons!
I highly recommend letting go of any pressure to earn an income as a designer for the first two years and just focus on honing in your skill. I promise that once you follow your passion, the money will eventually follow.
Q: I'm in my 50s, is it too late for me to have a creative career?
I love chatting with other surface designer and artists. There is so much wisdom from each interview that I often find myself referring back to it from time to time. Whenever I listen to the stories about their trials and tribulations, it always make me feel seen and a little less lonely.
Get organised and plan when to create art to increase your chances of getting licensed or selling on print-on-demand platforms like Society6 and Spoonflower. This guide also includes 365 days of prompts which means, you'll never have to suffer from "blank page syndrome" ever again.
The good news is, I've learned to have fun with it and make it as organic and authentic as possible by infusing it with my own voice.
In my previous life, I worked as a writer and I've learned a little thing or two about storytelling. And let me tell you, this is the secret sauce to EVERYTHING.
Your art, your brand, your sales pitch will look very differently once you become a storyteller not *sorry seller.
*Have you ever felt like you were bugging someone when promoting your products? It's time to be loud and proud about what you do!
